How to avoid categorical thinking about the opposite sex

(Psychology Today/ Nov-Dec 2008)

When we place people (including ourselves) into categories, we respond to circumstances (and people) in fixed, inflexible ways. If you find yourself labeled or labeling, you can make an effort to respond more flexibly:

 When you notice your tendency to label, you can consciously undo it by looking for counterevidence (the good chractersics of theotherpeson).

 It’s easy and natural to define a relationship from its origin, but you can discuss the direction openly and honestly with your partner (friend, co- worker, significant other).

 If you find that someone continues to view you from a fixed frame, you can actively decide not to adopt his/her view of you.
